First Women of Color Journal Club at UCSC!

This past week, the Women of Color Journal held their first meeting. We discussed the pieces of literature that we will be collectively reading and discussing on the biweekly basis as well as got the chance to talk about the statistics of representation for women of color in both the physics and astronomy departments. Currently, only 20% of those who receive a PhD in physics are women while women represent 38% of PhDs given in astronomy. Further, of the women who received a bachelors in either physics or astronomy, only 2.5% were represented by African American women, 3% Latinx women, 14% Asian women, and 80% White women. This journal club serves as the space curated for the support, validation, and empowerment of women of color in physics and astronomy. Come to our next meeting, Thursday (11/21) at 3:30pm in Thimann 103A to discuss our first piece of literature as well as to meet other fellow women of color in physics and astronomy. We also welcome those who want to learn how to be supportive allies as well!
